The Elephant problem in 1999

In the year 1999, there was a serious problem faced by the committee regarding the elephant procession. The regular elephant Rani which was used to carry the Mata Ghatam through the procession every year had fallen sick due to fire crackers busted in front of her during a political rally. The Nehru Zoological Park which owned Rani refused to lend her for the Procession. Though there were six more elephants in the Zoo, these were not trained to lead processions. So the last hope of the committee was on the elephant Hashmi which was used during the Bibi-Ka-Alam procession every year.

This was firstly owned by the Zoo but later bought by the Nizam trust. There was a lot of commotion going on whether the elephant would be given for the procession or not in the form of various paper articles. One of these paper articles was read by the Prince Muffakahm jah , Chairman of the Nizam Trust, who then directed the concerned to provide the elephant for the Bonalu Festival.
